Microsoft Claims Edge Is the ‘Best Performing Browser’ on Windows 10

Microsoft Edge: Best Performing Browser on Windows 10

In the wake of Internet Explorer’s demise, Microsoft is now all-in on Edge, and this was evident at Build 2021 this week, when Microsoft touted Edge’s performance. However, what really caught my eye was the announcement that developers will be able to offer progressive web apps (PWAs) in the Microsoft Store.

What’s improved?

5,300 Chromium commits accepted: We are committed to making the web better for everyone through Microsoft Edge. The Chromium project has accepted over 5,300 commits since launch so many of the improvements we’ve been working on for Microsoft Edge are now available to other Chromium-based browsers as well.

Edge Origins Trials continue, and expand: Our Edge Origins Trials program, announced last year and embraced by the developer community, continues to provide developers with the opportunity to test and preview new experiences—register at https://aka.ms/EdgeOriginTrials to join hundreds of developers in Origin Trials.

PWAs join the Microsoft Store: You can now submit a Progressive Web App (PWA) built on the Microsoft Edge platform to the Microsoft Store. In 3 easy steps, you can expand the reach of your PWA:

  1. Using the Windows Partner Center, you can reserve an app
  2. Use www.pwabuilder.com to package your PWA for Windows
  3. Approve the package at the Microsoft Store

Microsoft Edge takes performance to the next level

Why is this possible? It’s simple: Startup boost and sleeping tabs.

By running a set of core Microsoft Edge processes in the background, Startup boost enables Microsoft Edge to launch much faster, all without adding additional resources to the operating system. With Microsoft Edge, getting online and turning on your computer has never been easier.

In addition, using multiple browser tabs simultaneously is easier with the new sleeping tabs feature in Microsoft Edge. You can use it to optimize the performance of your Microsoft Edge browser by removing unused tabs from your system. Based on internal data collected on our preview builds, sleeping tabs have been further improved with up to 82% memory savings. By putting tabs in the background, ads are immediately put to sleep for instant resource savings. On Windows, sleeping tabs have also been improved to save more system resources.
